Community of Growers – Food, Flowers and Forests
The project was put together by a group of volunteers from Food Forest Centre Wellington, Kate Anderson, Kari Olsen and Susan McPhedran. We created a new group called the Fergus Elora Community of Growers for our Culture Days event, which was sponsored by the Township of Centre Wellington.
The idea was to highlight all the amazing growers of food, flowers and trees in Fergus and Elora and to show their locations and how the various sites could be visited by residents and visitors to our area.
Kate worked with the Elora Environment Centre to profile trees of significant interest or importance to our local habitats. Kari liaised with the Horticultural Societies and the Wellington County Museum and Archives to bring attention to the beautiful plantings of ornamental and cultural significance in Fergus and Elora. Susan worked with the Community Garden network and Food Forest Centre Wellington to highlight the multiple ways that residents and organizations are growing food to both serve their families and to donate to food support programs in our Township.
· Here is our event poster on the CultureDays website.
· And here is a link to a preview of our webpage, hosted by the Elora Environment Centre. You will find the map and links to all the sites featured on the map. The map is downloadable and interactive.
Paper copies of the interactive map will be posted at area tourism offices, libraries, the Centre Wellington Sportsplex and the Wellington County Museum and Archives to start.
Posters will be put up on various bulletin boards as well. Here is a link to it if you wish to forward the poster or print and post it for your own display area.
· We will go live closer to September 20, when Culture Days begins. As Ian offered in his email in June, we have used the Elora Cataract Trailway logo on the Culture Days website and on the flip side of the printed map. Each site is indicated by name and a number, with services available at each site included in the legend. We encourage visitors to walk or cycle but have indicated parking where available.
